Tier 6 started over a decade ago and there are over 100,000 NYSUT members in the retirement system in this tier. We are already seeing a shortage of people filling our Civil Service positions and this is one way we can help. By advocating for a fair deal in Tier 6, we can attract and maintain talented individuals. This will benefit everyone from staff, students, and our communities.
What is it like to be in Tier 6 now vs Tier 4?
- Members pay 3 to 6 percent for the duration of their career, and as the salary increases so do the contributions. Tier 4 stop at 3 percent and only pay for 10 years. That's huge!
- Want to retire? Tier 6 have to work up to 40 years of service to age 63 or face heavy penalties. Tier 4 can retire after 30 years of service at 55.
Why does this matter?
When some members are treated differently, getting less for the same work, it's unfair and creates an environment that can't compete to attract the brilliant minds and keep our future bright. No matter what Tier you are in, the current system hurts everyone.
